Simple, squishy, and endlessly adaptable—this basic beanie pattern is a cozy canvas for expression. Thoughtfully designed for loose knitters, it comes together quickly and effortlessly, making it ideal for beginners, busy makers, or anyone craving a satisfying weekend project.
Level: Beginner
What you will need:
- Size US 13 (9mm) 16-inch circular knitting needles
- Super bulky size 6 yarn. Note: The pattern is originally designed using Lion Brand Hometown 100% acrylic yarn
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations: K2tog = Knit 2 stitches together
Sizing: This pattern is written for Newborn-adult. I am a momma of 3 kiddos, all with heads in the 90th percentile. I wrote this pattern and sizes in each stage as they grew. I hope this helps if you are, like me, and have searched for a pattern that is actually true to size.
Newborn 0-3 months:
Cast on 30 stitches
Rows 1-5: Knit 1, Purl 1 around
Rows 6-16: Knit all rows
Row 17: K2tog, Knit 2 around
Row 18: Knit
Row 19: K2tog, Knit 1 around, last 2 stitches K2tog
Row 20: Knit around
Cut yarn, leaving a 6-8 inch tail. Using your tapestry needle, thread the tail and weave the remaining stitches off the needle and onto the tail. Pull tight and cinch closed. Knot the tail and weave it inside the beanie.
Baby 6-12 months:
Cast on 32 stitches
Rows 1-6: Knit 1, Purl 1 around
Rows 7-18: Knit all rows
Row 19: Knit 2, K2tog around
Row 20: Knit around
Row 21: Knit 2, K2tog around
Row 22: Knit around
Cut yarn, leaving a 6-8 inch tail. Using your tapestry needle, thread the tail and weave the remaining stitches off the needle and onto the tail. Pull tight and cinch closed. Knot the tail and weave it inside the beanie.
Toddler 1-3 years:
Cast on 34 stitches
Row 1-6: Knit 1, Purl 1 around
Rows 7-21: Knit all rows
Row 22: Knit 2, k2tog around, Knit last 2 stitches
Row 23: Knit around
Row 24: Knit 2, K2tog around, Knit last 2 stitches
Row 25: Knit around

Little Kid 4-8 years:
Cast on 36 stitches

Row 26: Knit around
Row 27: Knit 2, K2tog around
Row 28: Knit around

Adult: 10-100+ years
Cast on 40 Stitches
Rows 1-7: Knit 1, Purl 1 around
Rows 8-27: Knit around
Row 28: Knit 2, K2tog around
Row 29: Knit around
Row 30: Knit 2, K2tog around, Knit last 2 stitches
Row 31: Knit around
Cut yarn, leaving a 6-8 inch tail. Using your tapestry needle, thread the tail and weave the remaining stitches off the needle and onto the tail. Pull tight and cinch closed. Knot the tail and weave it inside the beanie.
